Fidget house, blog house, electro house, breaks and new rave-era mayhem. A lost chapter of The Young Punx history returns.

About the release

RETURN OF THE GOSH revisits three original tracks recorded in 2008–2009 by Goshi Goshi, the underground electro and fidget house alias of British producer Hal Ritson and The Young Punx.

Originally released through Fatboy Slim’s Southern Fried Records in 2009, The Lock Shot, Ravin’ Cru and Copy Thatwere enthusiastically received by DJs operating at the cutting edge of the late-2000s underground dance scene, with support from BBC Radio 1 DJs including Kissy Sell Out.

Seventeen years later, the three tracks have been remastered and reissued with newly created, streaming-friendly edits alongside the original extended DJ mixes. The reissue is credited jointly to Goshi Goshi and The Young Punx, reconnecting these recordings with the wider Young Punx discography for the first time.

The story of Goshi Goshi

In the late 2000s, The Young Punx were developing their Mashpop & Punkstep album, an eclectic combination of house, rock, disco, hip hop, drum and bass and other genres, tied together by a mashup-inspired production philosophy.

But alongside that work, an entirely different sound was emerging in underground dance clubs.

The fidget house and blog house scenes were pushing electronic dance music towards increasingly outrageous combinations of distorted basslines, eccentric synthesiser riffs, broken rhythms, aggressive production and deliberately ridiculous sonic ideas. Closely connected to the wider electro house explosion and the cultural phenomenon of new rave, this was the era of noisy, messy, irreverent dance music made for equally chaotic dancefloors.

After a summer DJ residency in Ibiza, Hal Ritson returned to the studio inspired by the raw energy of the music being played in underground clubs. Rather than incorporating these influences into the stylistically wide-ranging Young Punx album, the decision was made to create a separate project dedicated to this particular sound.

Goshi Goshi was born.

The project produced just three original tracks, but quickly gained traction in the specialist DJ community. The Lock Shotwas circulating in 2008, with the recordings subsequently finding a home on Southern Fried Records in 2009.

The music attracted support from influential DJs and radio presenters including Kissy Sell Out, Andy George and Jaymo, and appeared in DJ mixes and underground club playlists.

The Goshi Goshi alias was also used for several remixes, including Yazz’s classic The Only Way Is Up (2009), autoKratz’s Always More on Kitsuné, and a reworking of The Young Punx’s own MASHitUP.

Although relatively short-lived, Goshi Goshi became a distinctive part of The Young Punx’s musical history. The three original tracks remain among Hal Ritson’s personal favourite productions from the period, capturing a moment when underground electronic music seemed determined to become as inventive, excessive and gloriously strange as possible.

The 2026 reissue

The original recordings had become increasingly difficult to discover, partly because they were released under a separate alias without an obvious connection to The Young Punx.

RETURN OF THE GOSH brings the entire three-track project back into circulation.

The original extended mixes have been remastered, preserving their distinctive late-2000s production aesthetic. New shorter edits have also been created, removing some of the lengthy beat-only DJ introductions and outros to make the tracks better suited to contemporary streaming and everyday listening.

The recordings have deliberately not been reimagined or modernised. Their character comes precisely from the musical era in which they were created.

With renewed interest in the sounds and aesthetics of 2000s blog house, electroclash, indie sleaze and new rave, the reissue also introduces Goshi Goshi to a generation discovering that particular period of electronic music for the first time.

Beyond their original club context, the recordings are particularly evocative of late-noughties nightlife culture: the chaotic energy of Ibiza clubs, underground warehouse parties, hedonistic nights out and the collision of electronic music with alternative youth culture.

That makes them equally suited to contemporary listening and to film, television, advertising and video-game soundtracks looking to capture the authentic sound and atmosphere of that era.
